One of the big issues for families with younger (smaller) children when planning their trips to Walt Disney World, or any other theme park for that matter, is ensuring that there’s enough rides and attractions for them to be able to experience.
Many of the ‘big ticket’ popular rides fall into the thrill category, of varying degrees, and have some kind of height restriction applied for safety reasons. Now, to be honest, it’s not generally a major issue for a lot of families at Disney because a huge number of the rides and attractions have fairly low restrictions (in many cases the height is 40 inches – which makes it low enough for the average 4 year-old to go on).
That said, of course, there are always exceptions and always families with even younger children who still want to get the maximum enjoyment out of their time in the parks. And thankfully, at Disney, there’s plenty of choice so that, whatever the age, height or disposition of your travelling party, there will be more than enough to get great value and pleasure.
Here’s just a few of the best Disney rides with NO height restrictions from across the main parks.
Pirates of the Caribbean
One of the most iconic and best known old rides in Walt Disney World Resort, this ride is the inspiration for the blockbuster movies of the same name and is an enjoyable boat journey into the world of swashbuckling, rum supping, mischievous pirates. With an enjoyable mix of animatronics, models, music and lighting this is a gentle, enjoyable family ride as you look out for Capt. Jack Sparrow and his crew. Note for younger children, there is a small drop near the end and you do have periods of darkness in the ride but overall this is more than suitable for kids of of all ages.
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin
If you love Toy Story then you’ll love this ride. If you don’t, well you’ll probably love this ride anyway! Another gentle ride you will sit in your own small trolleys, each of you having what appears to be a toy laser gun on the front which you can point and shoot. As you wheel and spin your way through the ride aim your gun and shoot at all the different aliens, critters and targets, racking up points for every direct hit. Who’ll get the high score, mum, dad or kids? It’s all set up in true Toy Story cartoon imagery and enormous fun for young and old alike and a fantastic companion to the Toy Story ride in Disney’s Hollywood Studios (see below)
Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor
Another from the madcap Pixar universe this is a floor show that’s simply a riotous laugh for kids and one of the most popular ‘younger’ attractions over in Tomorrowland. A wild, wacky and downright silly comedy show aimed at tickling the funny bones of kids and adults alike starring some of the characters from the hit movie.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom
A centrepiece ride for the park, this a truck ride through Animal Kingdom’s African savannah. Here you can bump along the uneven paths as you take in some enormously impressive wildlife; from rhino and hippo to elephant and lion. A chance for the parents to wield their cameras as the kids spy on as many amazing animals as they can.
A classic old style fairground ride with an Animal Kingdom theme. This is a chance for kids to fly around on their own dinosaur on this really quite cute retro-style carnival ride as you gently rise and dip as the lights flash and the music plays. A bit of a classic favourite for the really young kids to enjoy.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Toy Story Midway Mania
Similar style ride to the Buzz Lightyear ride at Magic Kingdom this is simply brilliant, bonkers fun as you whirl your way through a surreal but totally kid-friendly world of colour, lights and music shooting digital paintballs and ping-pong balls at moving targets. The young’uns will surely love this crazy ride and the adults will love it even more!
The Great Movie Ride
This one is not so much a kids ride but included in the list as it has No height restriction and is a gentle ride through the movies as you find yourself immersed into the worlds of some of Hollywood’s great films from the Wizard of Oz and Casablanca to Mary Poppins or Raiders of the Lost Ark. A good one for movie lovers and a chance to get up close to some quality movie memorabilia as well.
Journey into Imagination with Figment
A ride fairly explicitly aimed at the younger audience this is a gentle cart ride through a series of animatronic scenes (and Eric Idle!) all to a very Disney style song on the theme of using your imagination to make everything possible. It’s colourful and catchy and innocent fun for young children.
The Seas with Nemo and Friends
Another colourful animatronic and digital style ride which uses Finding Nemo as the theme to take you through underwater scenes. One more for the kids this will appeal to the very young with older kids likely to grow a bit bored and itch to go on something a bit faster.
Of course, these are just a sample of popular favourites and there are plenty of other rides, shows and varying attractions which are suited to all ages and sizes – from character meets and themed rides and interactive performances.
