Enjoy the best of Disney, Universal and the Gulf Coast in one luxury family holiday

The Holiday

The following is a sample itinerary and put together to give you some ideas of the type of luxury multi-centre holidays we’ve had the pleasure in arranging for former clients.

A way to sample the very best of Disney, Universal and the stunning resort at the exclusive Long Boat Key. Naturally, there are many, many other destinations and ways to enjoy Florida and all its attractions.

The resorts all blend a sense of fun with elegant luxury, and are based on some of the favourite spots our clients have enjoyed over the past 12 months. Which also happen to feature high on our own personal favourites list.

Flights: Direct Flights are available from the UK courtesy of Virgin / Delta and British Airways / American Airlines.

Total Duration: 14 nights

1. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

Upon arrival at Orlando International Airport, don’t stress about car hire and driving to your hotel. Allow Disney’s Magical Express to meet you outside the arrivals hall and take you to your resort hotel: the magnificent Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. One of the Deluxe range of hotels, this is a firm family favourite, offering sumptuous rooms, wonderful leisure facilities, swimming pools and fantastic dining.

What’s more, you’re in the heart of the Walt Disney World resort, and straight into your holiday.

  • 5 Nights in a Family room with Pool View
  • Free Airport Transfer from Orlando Airport to hotel
  • Disney Dining Plan, which includes:1 quick-service meal, 1 table-service meal & 1 snack per guest, every day.
  • Disney’s Ultimate Ticket for each guest, allowing: unlimited access to all 6 main theme parks, access to golf course, 1 round of miniature golf per person per day, use of Fastpass+ to pre-book times on your favourite rides (up to 60 prior to leaving UK as a resort guest), FREE Memory Maker (allowing access to all official photos taken in the parks from action shots on the rides, to character photos etc – gate price currently $169)
  • Additional hours in the theme park

2. Car Hire

You probably won’t need a car while at Disney, and you may not want one at Universal either. So, the choice would be yours. Either collect a car on your last or penultimate day at Disney, keeping it for the duration of your holiday (pickup at Disney, return to airport). OR, get a pre-arranged transfer from Disney to your Universal Resort, picking up a car on your last day at the resort and retaining for the duration of your holiday.

3. Hard Rock Hotel® at Universal Orlando®

Your next resort let’s you take in the amazing parks at Universal Orlando Resort. While indulging yourself at a simply wonderful hotel. A personal favourite, you can find out what we really think about the place by taking a look here. But for now, here’s the breakdown of what’s included:

Universal’s Skull Island: Reign of Kong | Now Open

Universal’s Skull Island: Reign of Kong | Now Open

Skull Island: Reign of Kong™ Now Open at Universal Orlando®.

Skull Island: The Reign of Kong™ is the latest major attraction to be unveiled at Universal Orlando®. It’s been in the making for a couple of years now. If you’ve visited Universal’s Islands of Adventure™ over the past 12 months you will have noticed the burgeoning area growing up adjacent to the Jurassic World area.

And this week, the curtain was pulled back to reveal the zone and the ride just in time for the glut of Brits heading over to Orlando for the summer holidays.

Return of the King

For those with a sense of nostalgia for the old Universal Studio days, having King Kong back as a major feature of the parks is a pleasing nod back to the heritage of the park. And, indeed, to the gloriously monster-based history of the studio itself.

Back in the heady, early and really rather innocent days of the Universal park (when it was just ONE park and way before IoA and Wizarding Worlds) there were a number of classic features from the Universal movies cannon. The Jaws ride, a classic Back to the Future ride, an Earthquake adventure.

And Kong.

The King Kong ride back then took the theme from the classic 1930s monster movie, where the giant ape goes walkabout through the streets of Manhattan. We, as gleeful participants, would get close to the action thanks to a cable car ride.

It was all rather simplistic. But it was great fun nonetheless.

What of Skull Island?

Well, to tell you the truth, we don’t know, yet.

And why spoil the surprise? Finding out the thrills of a new ride in person is part of the joy, isn’t it?

The background though is that this new incarnation will take us to the KK’s home world – the eponymous Skull Island (of which a film with Tom Hiddlestone, among others, is in production as we speak).

Which almost certainly means an immersive adventure into a land of creepy crawlies, twists, turns and beastly doings. If our experiences with the other quite brilliant adventures at the park are anything to go by.

What Universal have achieved with their themed rides and ‘worlds’ from the astonishing Harry Potter areas to the high-octane Spiderman (and soon to be re-born Hulk ride), is remarkable.

And the Kong ride will surely be just another amazing adventure. And yet more reason to visit.

Express Pass?

It’s unclear just at the moment if the new ride will be eligible for Express Pass use. Upon opening Express Passes were not permitted and all had to use the regular queue.

However, that’s not uncommon with a new feature.

After all, the designers have almost certainly gone to extraordinary lengths to create a story that begins in the queue and would want everyone to get a flavour of that (albeit courtesy of some hefty waiting times!).

We don’t know about the future – although our personal guess is that after a period of time, Express Passes will be permitted.

[OUR VIEW: Stay on site at a resort hotel if you can. Especially one of the hotels that offer Express Passes as complimentary. Careful planning and timing your visits can keep the queues to a minimum).

Iconic Orlando Water Park to close at the end of 2016

It’s been a fixture of the Orlando theme park circuit for four decades. The first big name among the birth of the water parks in America. But come the end of 2016, the world famous and iconic Wet’n’Wild water park on International Drive will be closing its doors for the very last time.

The park, owned by Universal Orlando® since 1998, is seen as something of a trailblazer among water parks – famed for its innovative and thrilling rides.

Black Hole at Wet'n'Wild Orlando

“From Brain Wash to Der Stuka, Wet’n’Wild still packs a high-octane punch for water slide lovers.”

Brain Wash at Wet'n'Wild Orlando

The 40 acre site is likely to become the site for new property development on the prime International Drive location. Sure to make the nostalgic among us more than a little sad. However, the reality is that Wet’n’Wild was probably reaching the end of the line as the major theme parks need to evolve and keep up with the times.

A reason why, in the wake of the park’s closing, Universal will, in 2017, be opening an new water park – Volcano Island – close to Cabana Bay on the Universal site itself.

We last visited in April this year and, while there’s a certain dated feel to the surroundings, the rides themselves are as thrilling as they’ve ever been. The sheer drop of Der Stuka and the turbulent tube ride of Brain Wash are particular highlights. With Disco H20, Aqua Drag Racer and The Storm offering speed, twists and thrills of their own.

For ride quality alone, Volcano Bay will have a lot to live up to.

Aqua Drag Racer at Wet'n'Wild Orlando

But times change and one of the reasons that Orlando has remained so popular year after year is because of the new attractions that come along.

Over the past twenty years, the water parks at Walt Disney World and SeaWorld® have pretty much overtaken Wet’n’Wild as the main water park sites in the Orlando area. In particular the attraction of having water parks on-site (Such as Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon) combined exquisite design, great rides and convenient location to make for hugely popular choices.

Which makes the prospect of a new park at Universal something of an exciting proposition.

Even if we are sad to see the end of Wet’n’Wild

Why Book a Villa Holiday in Orlando

Why Book a Villa Holiday in Orlando

There’s a lot to love about a villa holiday in Orlando

A villa holiday is one of the more popular ways to enjoy a holiday in Orlando for many who venture to the region. It’s a particular favourite if you happen to be travelling in a larger group; typically an extended family holiday with kids, parents and grandparents along for the fun.

So what are the key attractions to a villa holiday in Orlando?

A Villa is perfect for large groups

Orlando is a destination which often attracts larger groups of family or friends. And a villa can be the offer the perfect answer for your accommodation needs.

There are literally thousands of private villas and townhouses available to rent throughout the Orlando area, most of which you’ll find within relatively easy driving access to the main theme parks. And there’s generally a villa to fit any party size, from a family of 4 to groups of 10, 12, 14 and even some that can accommodate up to 18 people.

Excellent Value

For what you get in terms of space, amenities and home from home style luxury, a villa in Orlando can offer truly exceptional value for money. In particular when sharing a larger property as an extended family or 2 families holidaying together.

For instance, we found one of a number of holiday villas available on the property rental site, HomeAway which offers:

  • 5 Bedrooms
  • 5 Bathrooms
  • Private Pool and patio area
  • Fully equipped modern kitchen, dining & living areas
  • A Games room
  • TV, DVD
  • Located just 2.5 miles from Disney on the gated community of Windsor Hills
  • Communal pool on resort with play slides

This villa is licenced to accommodate up to 12 people and is the perfect size for 2 families to share (or a family of 4 Plus grandparents perhaps).

A week in this villa is liable to cost around £1525 in the height of the season. Divide that by 2 families and it’s £762.50 per family. (please note these are only approximate prices and used for illustration purposes only).

Not bad value when you consider the standard of accommodation (plus amazingly convenient location) you will be getting. You can get full details of this and other similar properties here.

Great Base From Which to Explore Orlando

A villa can provide the perfect balance between all the fun and excitement of the main attractions in Orlando with the respite of getting away from it all and chilling out in the confines of your own space.

It really can be like having a home from home experience, everyone having their area to relax and lounge around when needed. I know that many want to be in the mix of things at one of the many amazing holiday resorts and hotels at Disney, Universal or along International Drive – and that’s perfectly fine. I’ve done that myself and it’s wonderful fun.

But for many others, the villa just offers a delightful mix of the chilled out, the luxurious and, given that most are an easy drive from the attractions, very accessible when it comes to enjoying all that Orlando has to offer. And it has a lot to offer.

Orlando and The Gulf Coast – A Twin Centre Holiday Itinerary

animal kingdom expedition everest
sunset over the Gulf of Mexico

The pull of the theme parks is a strong one for many families heading to Florida – as we’ve said before, it’s one of those BIG holiday trips to make while the kids are, well, still kids. However, a week or more of ‘hitting the parks’ can be a little tiring – especially in those summer months when the temperatures soar and the humidity begins to take its toll.

Which is why so many families opt for a week or ten days of action and non-stop fun around Disney, Universal and the other main theme parks, before packing up and heading to the relative serenity of a resort along the Gulf Coast. Whether Clearwater and St Pete’s near Tampa (and pretty much the closest port of call from Orlando) to Sarasota, Fort Myers, Naples or any number of other beautiful resorts as you move south along the coastline. Each one offering stunning white sandy beaches, the warm and calm blue water of the Gulf of Mexico and pure, indulgent chilled out holiday time. The perfect relaxed antidote to the hectic Orlando pace.

Something like this,perhaps?
